Design Statement
The brief from the Queensland Government’s Department of Justice was for a timeless, memorable and elegant interior, providing an experience worthy of one of the most important days in someone’s life.
Those arriving at level 32 could easily be mistaken for thinking they had arrived at a hotel lobby. The foyer features a marble reception counter, framed by wall panelling embossed with faded text of the lives of prominent Queenslanders.
The brief for this project included several mixed uses not often seen in workplace design. In addition to an agile, paper-light workspace for 120 staff the brief required a flexible design for a variety of ancillary services, including customer service, ceremony spaces, as well as registry and private consultation spaces.
The broad mix of services provided in this facility provided a design challenge to the architects: requiring a space which is fit for purpose for delivering joyous marriage ceremonies to issuing and administering birth and death certificates.
Mindful of the facility’s public nature and important role in the delivery of key government services, the architect incorporated a sense of welcome and sophistication in the design, with the use of signature light fittings and wood panelling.
