TAFE NSW and Stylecraft join forces to launch First Nations scholarship

A new First Nations interior design scholarship has been announced to further encourage Indigenous Australians to join the ever-evolving local design industry.

The scholarship will cover the full fees of a Bachelor of Interior Design at TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore, along with providing educational support to the successful applicant throughout their studies.

Stylecraft managing director Anthony Collins says the scholarship is an exciting opportunity for aspiring Indigenous designers to get a “head start” in the thriving interior design industry.

“Stylecraft has committed to this scholarship program for three years, so by 2024, there will be three students in the interior design stream completing the program.

The scholarship will cover the full fees of the three-year design course.

Collins also says Stylecraft will also work with TAFE NSW to identify any internship or mentoring opportunities for scholarship recipients.

“The ultimate aim of the program is to encourage participation by Indigenous Australians in interior design.”

The program aims to encourage the participation of Indigenous creatives in the design industry.

As for the practicalities of the scholarship, TAFE NSW head of creative and design ideation Richard Cass explains that it will be awarded on the basis of study and career potential.

Considerations include the applicant’s career goals, motivation and creative portfolio.

“TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore is a purpose-built design studio where students are able to immerse themselves in design. It’s the perfect place to build design skills and get a head start in the booming interior design industry,” he says.

“TAFE NSW will ensure that scholarship recipients receive academic support through progressive review and solutions with head teachers, teachers and the Aboriginal Education and Engagement Team.”

The Bachelor of Interior Design program at TAFE NSW is a three-year professional degree where students are taught how to create innovative and original concepts of commercial interior design projects, and explore the spatial, structural and material elements of built interior environments.
