Meet our Designer of the Year finalists for IDEA 2021

From the almost 300 projects shortlisted, there can only be one winner across each of our 15 categories, but there are also five special awards.

Of those, the most hotly contested has to be the 2021 Designer of the Year, with industry heavyweights Fender Katsalidis, YSG, FMD Architects, Arent&Pyke, Fiona Lynch, Kennedy Nolan and Travis Walton Architecture all vying for the night’s crown.

With a few weeks left to go yet, ADR would like to raise a glass to each of the Designer of the Year finalists and congratulate them – and all our readers – on a wonderful year of interior design and architecture brilliance.

FMD Architects

Founded in 2005 by Fiona Dunin, FMD Architects tells the stories of the place on which they reside and the stories of the people who occupy them, both past and present.

With studios in Melbourne and Hobart, the practice develops site-sensitive, sustainable design responses embedded with the particularities of its clients.

FMD Architects has Coopworth, and Ripple House shortlisted in the Residential Single category and QC Chambers featuring in Workplace Under 1000 sqm category.

Travis Walton Architecture

Travis Walton.

Established in 2010, Travis Walton Architecture is a full-service design firm that specialises in bringing to life unusual and innovative projects with style and imagination.

Passionate about fine detail and inspired by the unexpected, the Melbourne practice’s design philosophy guarantees a unique and vibrant design solution for each new subject and space.

Travis Walton Architecture has Albert Park Residence, and Carlton North Residence shortlisted in the Residential Single category, and Caulfield North Office featuring in the Workplace Under 1000sqm category.

Kennedy Nolan

Kennedy Nolan was established in 1999 by Rachel Nolan and Patrick Kennedy and has since developed a reputation as a design-focused practice with a distinctive approach to built form.

The practice is dedicated to the production of architecture that is highly responsive to its context and seeks to form a strong relationship with the landscape.

Kennedy Nolan has Milkbar House, Hawthorn House, Elizabeth House, and The Lothian shortlisted in the Residential Single category. They also have Ballarat House and Erksine House shortlisted in both the Colour and Residential Single categories, with Research Primary School featuring in the Institutional shortlist.

Fender Katsalidis

Fender Katsalidis interiors lead Rosie Morley.

Founded on the philosophy of innovation through collaboration, Fender Katsalidis has evolved from a Melbourne-centric architectural practice to a highly awarded multi-disciplinary international design firm whose work now influences built environment thinking across the globe.

Fender Kasalidis are specialists in multi-residential, cultural, commercial, aged care and hotel typologies.

Fender Katsalidis has Paragon, Melbourne Quarter, Piper Residences, Yarra One, and the Grounds of Kew shortlisted in the Residential Multi category.

Arent&Pyke

Arent&Pyke is a Sydney-based design practice headed by Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke, encompassing interior architecture and design with a unique focus on the decorative arts.

Since the formation of their practice in 2007, the duo has fine-tuned its philosophy around what it means to make a space sing.

Arent&Pyke has Darley House, La Casa Rosa, Garden House, Queens Park House shortlisted in the Residential Single category with Hue House in the Residential – Interior Curation category.

Fiona Lynch

Fiona Lynch’s eponymous studio was founded in 2013 and has since worked on a range of residential, retail, office, hospitality, institutional and hotel projects.

Incorporating architectural and interior design services, Fiona Lynch’s atmospheric creations embody spirited minimalism with a keen emphasis on custom joinery, furniture and lighting design.

Fiona Lynch has Kew House and St Kila Apartment shortlisted in the Colour category, with 80 Collins in Public Space, and CicciaBella a Hospitality shortlist. Lynch also has Ottawa House shortlisted in both the Residential – Interior Curation and Residential Single categories, with Burnely House shortlisted in the Residential – Interior Curation category.

YSG

YSG director Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem.

With more than 15 years under her belt, Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem is known for her boundary-pushing and bespoke style.

Previously at the helm of Amber Road with landscape architect and sister Katy Svalbe, Ghoniem struck out on her own last year in February, launching YSG in a refurbished hair salon on Liverpool Street in Darlinghurst.

YSG consolidates her finely tuned design strengths, enabling her to further explore diverse new project paths together with her illustrious team, including indulging in her passion for custom furniture design.

YSG has Dreamweaver shortlisted in the Residential -Interior Curation, Residential-Single, and Colour categories, with Soft Serve also shortlisted in the Residential – Interior Curation and Residential Single Categories. Crane in the Sky is shortlisted in Residential – Interior Curation, Budge Over Dover in Colour and Residential-Single, Atomic Beer Project in Colour and Hospitality, Johnson Partners in Colour and Workplace Under 1000sqm, Four Pillars Laboratory – Eileen’s Bar and Gin Laboratory in Hospitality, and lastly, Four Pillars Laboratory and Gin Shop featuring as a shortlist in Colour and Retail.
